Julien Laurat awarded the CNRS Silver Medal
This award recognizes the early work of researchers who have become specialists in their field.
Julien Laurat, Professor of Physics at Sorbonne University and member of the Institut Universitaire de France, is an expert in quantum information within the Quantum Optics – Quantum Networks team. He has just been awarded the CNRS Silver Medal.

Stopping light in order to better transmit quantum information: this lies at the heart of Julien Laurat’s research. His goal is to build quantum networks capable of linking computers, sensors, and quantum communication devices, from the scale of a laboratory to that of long-distance networks.
He develops systems capable of controlling photons by making them interact with laser-cooled atoms. This work leads, for example, to quantum memories that make it possible to synchronize operations—an essential function at the core of such networks.
Over the past decade, he has added nanophotonic devices to his toolkit, enabling better confinement of light and stronger interactions with cold atoms. This is long-term research at the frontier between fundamental physics and advanced engineering.
