Sylvain Gigan receives the Prix Fabry-de Gramont 2016
Sylvain Gigan receives the Fabry-de Gramont Prize.

The Fabry-de Gramont Prize was established in memory of the physicist Charles Fabry (1867-1945), the first Director General of the Institut d’Optique, famous for his work on interference, and Mr Armand de Gramont (1879-1962), an optics industrialist and founder of the Institut d’Optique.
The Prize is awarded to a young researcher (under 40) of international renown whose research work has been noted for its quality, originality and potential impact.
The 2016 Fabry-de Gramont Prize was awarded to Sylvain Gigan, a professor at Pierre and Marie Curie University and researcher at the Kastler Brossel Laboratory. After completing his thesis at the Laboratoire Kastler-Brossel, he did a post-doctorate at the University of Vienna. In 2007, he joined the ESPCI and the Langevin Institute before returning to the LKB in 2014.

How to observe a quantum wave packet in situ?
Researchers have successfully observed the free expansion of a quantum wave packet of a single atom in continuous space. Using a novel imaging technique that combines optical trapping and quantum gas microscopy, they tracked with unprecedented precision the spreading of the probability density associated with an atom released from its trap.
