The Exotic Ions team uses exotic atoms and highly charged ions to probe fundamental interactions: we test QED in the strongest fields available in the laboratory, measure nuclear charge radii, and look for new physics.

Antiprotonic atoms

PAX, our ERC project at CERN’s Antimatter Factory: precision x-ray spectroscopy of antiprotonic atoms with TES detectors to test strong-field QED. We also take part in ASACUSA, PUMA and GBAR. Read more

Muonic atoms

QUARTET measures the charge radii of light nuclei at PSI with MMC detectors; HEATES tests strong-field QED with muonic atoms at J-PARC. Read more

Highly charged ions

Reference-free x-ray spectroscopy of few-electron ions with our double crystal spectrometer at SIMPA in Paris, and heavy-ion experiments with the SPARC collaboration at GSI/FAIR. Read more

QED theory

Relativistic atomic-structure and QED calculations for highly charged ions and exotic atoms, including the MCDFGME code. Read more
